Menopause and Loss of Libido

by Cathy Taylor

As reported by numerous females, menopause, the final stage in the cycle of female menstruation, contributes to a significant loss of libido. One of the more common complaints from women (and their partners) is the loss of sexual desire and drive. This absence disrupts the sexual lives of countless couples, and therapy is often sought after as an answer to this problem. In the following paragraphs, we will discuss causes, external factors such as physical pain that prevents sexual intercourse, solutions for restoring estrogens, and life situations menopausal women face that contribute to their hormonal causes for libido failure (i.e. body image.)

The period before menopause is known as the pre- or perimenopause period when some loss of libido occurs. The hormone called progesterone is responsible for this downfall and is key to causing a resulting hormonal imbalance. Remember, the job of hormones is to regulate certain processes in the body. An insufficiency in hormones disrupts this balance and creates problems. Loss of libido is not restricted to having a lack of sexual desire. Vaginal dryness and discomfort can force women to avoid having sex altogether. Creams and gels are used to combat this problem. The emotional changes associated with menopause can also affect sexual desires, as women often feel overly aggressive, irritable, and sometimes depressed mental conditions that require peace time instead of hot and heaviness.

Estrogen is the primary sex hormone in a woman. As discussed earlier, a loss of estrogen leads to a loss of sexual desire. Remember, women also produce testosterone (in low levels), and testosterone is also responsible for promoting sexual drive. Lack of energy and depression occur because of these decreased levels, plummeting libido to close to non-existent. In order to restore libido, hormone therapy is highly recommended. Doctors can prescribe testosterone in a liquid form to keep you alert and increase what youve lost. There are gels and creams (such as Alura) designed to directly stimulate the clitoris. These creams often leave you with a tingling feeling that can help you achieve multiple orgasms.

There are over the counter medications out there that combat loss of libido. There are progesterone creams with bio-synthetic qualities that restore safe amounts of progesterone in the body to increase sex drive. There is also something called Phytoestrogen Cream that help balance the levels of available amounts of estrogen in the body and provide homeostasis when there are plummeting estrogen levels.

There are other things that affect menopausal womens level of libido. Not all women have the same levels of sexual drive. For example, 65-year-old women who have already undergone menopause are more likely to have less sexual desire than 49 year old women who has just finished the final stages of their menstruation. Menopause also affects the way women look at themselves in terms of body. Distorted views on body shape during menopause, when thought is greatly affected, can also decrease the desire for sex. If a woman is taking medicine for depression during this period, her libido can increase more than someone off the drug. Outside factors such as work-related stress, can also determine libido levels in a woman and usually require a shift in perspective to regain balance. In a lot of ways, menopause is a reshaping of who we are and what we want out of life.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

by Jeanette Pollock

For many years, the debate on whether to use estrogen and progesterone to replace hormones lost during menopause has seemed to have finally cooled. Although many studies were conducted that said that HRT not only helped calm the effects of menopause, but would also reduce the risks a Alzheimers disease, these studies have now been replaced with others that state the opposite.

So what does this mean for those with menopause? It means that every case is unique and you should seek a doctor who can give you an honest opinion about HRT. Many doctors today feel that in severe cases, a very low does of HRT may help relieve symptoms brought on by menopause. Doctors warn, however, that these doses should be short-term only.

HRT does not work for everyone. There are other ways to combat symptoms of menopause. Diet, exercise, reducing stress, and living your life despite that fact that you have menopause are more effective ways to reduce the effect of the symptoms.

But if you are still looking into HRT, there are a few things you should do before beginning any treatment.

 Always consult a doctor

Talk with others who have had HRT

Find out all the information you can

Decide if it is better to just wait it out instead of taking any medication

Look into your family history also and see if any types of cancer are present. Some studies suggest that HRT may cause cancer. Have regular check-ups with your doctor to monitor your bodys reaction to HRT.

An Existential Perspective on Infertility

by Clare Mann

The choice to have a baby for some people doesnt seem like a choice at all. There is a certain inevitability that only seems dependent on the right set of circumstances. For others, the decision is not so straightforward with ambivalence about ones ability, timing and possible compromises coming into the equation. But whatever your circumstances, what happens when your choice to have a baby doesnt result in a pregnancy? How can you make sense of your emotions and the anxiety that results? How can you integrate a changed world view, reminding you that all choices are bounded by individual and existential limitations?

The choice to conceive, like all choices, is the first step on the road to a new reality of which we already have expectations. You may feel that it is only a matter of time before conception occurs and you become a parent. Every month you avidly wait for signs of a pregnancy with the predictable mix of excitement and nervousness. Yet another period signals that this month you have not been successful. Overwhelming disappointment and better luck next month propels you from this potential despair to future hope. As time progresses, subtle changes may occur in accepting this reality. You may

  • eagerly seek ways to increase your chances

  • become desperate and depressed

  • shake your fist at the injustice of your situation

  • become resentful or depressed at the sight of babies and new mothers

  • deny your desires or play tricks with yourself, pretending that you have given up

Maybe in giving up your body will just relax and hey presto the much anticipated pregnancy will be forthcoming well, this is what everyone tells you.

The reality for many women is a long and lonely journey that challenges ones very existence as a woman. In not conceiving, she is forced to confront deeper existential anxieties about the uncertainty of life. What are these existential concerns and how might the experience of infertility and potential childlessness be positively integrated into ones own journey?

The key concerns are choice, anxiety, aloneness and uncertainty.

  • An inescapable aspect of being human is that we must choose. All choices are limited by circumstances and sometimes seem so limited that they do not feel like choices at all. The experience of infertility is often one of those choices the sense of powerlessness that results may lead us to cry that we have no choice However, the existential perspective is that we always have choice - sometimes the only choice left to us is attitudinal or choosing not to choose by allowing fate to take over.

  • Because of the inevitability of choice, anxiety is a predictable outcome since in choosing one thing, we do not know the outcome of alternative courses of action.

  • We are also alone in our choices despite advice, support or pressure, we alone must choose with no objective rightness against which to judge the efficacy of our decisions.

  • With no objective yardstick against which to judge our actions, we must face the uncertainty that results from being unable to predict the outcome of choices those made and those rejected.

Myths unquestioned assumptions influencing our choices

Underpinning our choices are Myths unquestioned assumptions that hoodwink us into believing we share an objective social reality. Myths are socially and culturally determined and often become so fixed that they feel like objective realities. For example, Myths exist regarding parenting, mothering, childlessness, fertility, relationships, finding meaning etc. The existence of these subtly and directly affects our choices and how we believe we should respond to lifes circumstances. However, despite their power in shaping perceptions, they are assumptions which, if unquestioned inhibit us fully embracing the enormity of our aloneness, uncertainty, freedom and anxiety. Experiences like infertility offer an opportunity to re-visit the responsibility we have for choosing our responses to lifes existential realities.

Soy Protein PMS Remedies May Not Work Alone, Dietary and Lifestyle Changes Help

by Patsy Hamilton

Soy protein PMS remedies are recommended because soy isoflavones have an estrogen like effect on the body. PMS vitamins, B-complex specifically are recommended for other reasons.

No one knows what causes PMS. The PMS symptoms that are probably related to lower levels of estrogen, during the last two weeks of the cycle, include fluid retention or bloating, because estrogen helps to maintain fluid balance. Laboratory studies have shown that estrogen also prevents serotonin from breaking down so rapidly. Serotonin is the bodys mood regulator, helps to regulate sleep cycles and appetite.

Soy protein PMS remedies are sometimes helpful because they have an estrogen like effect on the body. The active compound in soy is believed to be isoflavones. Other plants containing isoflavones include red clover, which is why red clover is sometimes recommended as a PMS remedy.

Other dietary supplements may relieve the symptoms of PMS. Vitamins B1, D, E, the minerals calcium and magnesium, the amino acids L-histidine and L-tyrosine, the herbs black cohosh, chasteberry, sarsaparilla and tribulus terrestris can all help relieve symptoms of PMS, when used in combination with proper nutrition, good diet, exercise and lifestyle changes.

Studies concerning the effects of soy protein PMS remedies alone do not always return positive results. A possible cause is that other aspects of a womans life are not considered. There is probably no miracle cure for PMS, but many women have found that making positive changes in diet, exercise regimen, lifestyle and supplementing with soy protein PMS formulas, PMS vitamins, B-complex and multi-vitamins or herbal remedies are effective. These are all good changes, cannot hurt you and can prevent the necessity of taking anti-depressants or synthetic hormones.

It may seem like a lot to do when you are tired, which most of us are during PMS. The logical first step then is to take a good daily multivitamin, PMS vitamins, B-complex or other natural products that increase energy. Lack of B vitamins can lead to depression and fatigue. Try increasing them as a first step. It should give you the energy to work out or at least go for a walk, which increases levels of something very important when it comes to hormones; DHEA.

DHEA is converted to estrogen and other hormones by the body. Athletes take DHEA supplements to increase energy and endurance. Since exercising increases levels of DHEA, you can see how once you start exercising; you have more energy, because DHEA increases energy. Athletes take supplements to push themselves to levels that you may not need to go to for PMS relief, but, if fatigue is a big problem for you, you can try the botanical tribulus terrestris, which will increase energy levels even more than PMS vitamins, B-complex or multi-vitamins alone. Studies have shown that tribulus increases levels of DHEA circulating in the blood stream.

If depression or mood swings are a big problem for you, then soy protein PMS formulas alone may not be effective, but another plant derivative could be. 5-HTP is used by the body to create serotonin, which as mentioned earlier, regulates mood. 5-HTP has been studied as an effective alternative to prescription antidepressants. Menopause Natural Remedy

by Melissa Ream

Menopause, which is sometimes referred to as the 'change of life,' usually affects women ages 50 and over. In some cases, however, women under 50 have been known to experience menopause. In an effort to ease the discomfort associated with this natural occurrence, many women turn toward a menopause natural remedy.

A common menopause natural remedy is the use of cotton fabric as both apparel and bedding. Being that it is a breathable fabric, cotton is often recommended as the most comfortable clothing to wear during menopausal hot flashes. During the night, cotton bedding will be comfortable and breathable and help to absorb moisture from sweating during a hot flash.

Among the remaining menopause natural remedy treatments are acupuncture, hot or cold packs for aching back muscles, aromatherapy, relaxation techniques and improved sleeping habits. During menopause, sleep disturbances are very common. In order to help make each night a more restful one, individuals often try to make their accommodations more comfortable. This is the perfect menopause natural remedy for improved sleep and is often accomplished by making sure the temperature is comfortable in the room, the use of cotton betting and a comfortable mattress, an air purifier to make the air clean and cool, etc.

During menopause, many women suffer from mood swings. In an effort to reduce this occurrence, many turn toward relaxation techniques and breathing exercises to help maintain a healthy balance. In addition, many find that yoga exercises are beneficial in teaching relaxation, breathing and other positive goals.

There are also a number of herbal remedies, which can be explained by a physician or through reading various books dedicated to the treatment of menopause. A physician would be an excellent source of information relating to the various menopause natural remedy treatments that would be the safest and most effective for each individual patient.

The symptoms of menopause vary from one woman to another, but most commonly include hot flashes, sleep disturbances, menstrual irregularity, back and muscle pain, irritability, fatigue and mood swings. If a women begins to experience any or all of these symptoms, she should visit a local physician in order to confirm the diagnosis and obtain a recommended treatment method.

The information in this article is to be used for informational purposes only. It should not be used in place of, or in conjunction with, professional medical advice. Anyone with questions regarding a menopause natural remedy should consult their physician for further information.

The Whole Truth About Menopause

Finding A Natural Cure For Female Hot Flash

by Patsy Hamilton

There is a natural cure for female hot flash, at least for most women. Because of the health risks associated with hormone replacement therapy or HRT, many women seek alternative treatment for hot flashes and night sweats. Researchers have evaluated many of these treatments.

For many years doctors only recommended HRT for women bothered by hot flashes and night sweats, but that trend is changing. Even though most doctors prefer not to suggest herbs and botanicals, black cohosh is now recommended as an alternative treatment for hot flashes and night sweats. Even the North American Menopause Society lists black cohosh as something that may help.

At one time womens clinics relied on equine estrogens and synthetic progesterone to help women with menopausal symptoms, but now the better clinics evaluate a womans lifestyle and diet, before writing a prescription. Lifestyle and dietary changes may take time and some women find them frustrating.

Botanicals like black cohosh can help ease this transitional period. If a womans lifestyle is an issue, she may not need to take black cohosh on a long-term basis, but research has shown that it does not increase the growth of estrogen sensitive breast and uterine cancer cell lines in the laboratory. So, if a woman does need to take it for many years, there is believed to be no health risks associated with its use.

Black cohosh is a natural cure for female hot flash in many cases, but there are other botanicals that can help if black cohosh proves to be ineffective. Many doctors are not familiar with the following herbs and botanicals, but clinical research has shown that, at least for some women they are somewhat effective.

Isoflavones are plant compounds that have an estrogen-like effect on a womans body. Soy and red clover isoflavones are the most commonly seen. As an alternative treatment for hot flashes and night sweats, research has shown that dietary supplements containing soy isoflavones reduce symptoms by as much as 80%.

Mood swings trigger hot flashes in some women. There are botanicals like St. Johns Wort and 5-HTP that help stabilize moods. Either of these may be an effective alternative treatment for hot flashes and night sweats. Most herbalists recommend that St. Johns Wort should not be taken continuously for more than a few weeks, without a week off. One of the compounds found in St. Johns Wort builds up in the liver and is not recommended for people with liver disease of dysfunction. No adverse reactions are believed to be associated with 5-HTP. It is similar to tryptophan, but the manufacturing process is safer.

Tribulus terrestris is a botanical that has been used by athletes and bodybuilders to increase endurance and stamina. Laboratory evaluation seems to indicate that the body can use tribulus to create hormones. Contrary to what some people believe, not all of a womans hormones are produced by the ovaries. The body can make what it needs from other hormones, if they are present. Balancing hormonal levels is believed to be a natural cure for female hot flash.

There are other herbs that have been used historically to correct hormonal imbalances. Sarsasparilla and red clover are two that were used historically by Native Americans to correct symptoms associated with hormonal imbalances. Some supplement companies blend together several herbs, botanicals, plant component and vitamins to provide women with an alternative treatment for hot flashes and night sweats, as well as the many other symptoms that may be associated with menopause. Early Menopause Symptoms

by Jodie Phillips

When a woman experiences menopause before the age of 40 it is termed perimenopause or early menopause. Early menopause symptoms are the same as those of normal menopause. Early menopause symptoms manifest themselves in the form of brittle bones, mood changes, heart disease and other problems.

Early menopause symptoms are seen more in women who smoke regularly and those who have never conceived. Such women are more prone to heart attacks and an increased cholesterol level. Since menopause has occurred earlier than usual, such women must consult their doctor to learn about ways to fight the early menopause symptoms.

Early menopause symptoms result from decrease in production of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. This causes less absorption of calcium and results in fractures. One should therefore take calcium supplements in the diet, in the form of leafy vegetables and soy products.

Hot flushes and nighttime sweating are one of the most common early menopause symptoms. These are caused due to constraint of blood vessels. Hot flushes disturb ones sleep and can cause insomnia. One becomes restless and a lack of rest can leave a person feeling irritable.

Other early menopause symptoms include dry skin and a persistent burning sensation on the body. Applying a lot of moisturizer all over the body can treat this. One gets migraine attacks from time to time and the joints become stiff.

Reduction in hormone production causes a loss of elasticity in body tissues. Due to this women experience early menopause symptoms like vaginal dryness, painful intercourse and a general lack of interest in sexual matters. Women may get an urge to urinate more frequently due to some loss of bladder control.

In general, the premature onset of menopause is a tough time for any woman with increase in occurrence of early menopause symptoms like fatigue, low selfconfidence and a general feeling of rejection. However, information about the early menopause symptoms ensures that one can handle menopause better. One must adopt healthy habits in the mid-thirties itself. This includes no smoking, a moderate intake of alcohol and a nutritious diet of green vegetables and lean meats. All women must take a cup of low-fat milk everyday to build healthy bones and a store of calcium in the body.

It is a good idea to reduce the intake of tea and coffee to a minimum since this hampers absorption of calcium. One can substitute the bodys hormones by natural plant estrogens like tofu. A woman must incorporate a regular exercise regimen in her daily schedule. This can be in the form of a brisk walk or any other physical activity to build strong bones. Overall, physical activity induces a feeling of good health and is the best weapon against early menopause symptoms. One can also take hormone replacement therapy under strict medical supervision to combat early menopause symptoms. The line of treatment to overcome early menopause symptoms varies from a woman to woman and depends on the individuals needs and physical health.
